I get many questions from those I teach about "How to get FASTER ?" - This is my personal opinion, there will a lot of haters out there so .... IMPROPER technique will BREAK YOUR JOINTS .. so be careful -- Lots of people do SPRINTS when it's Flat & Boring.. GOOD technique being the MUST .. this is a great way to build POWER to get SPEED. I am great believer in using BIGGER blades ( even a Steering Blade ) with a giant SURFACE area to MODULATE the stroke rate and FORCE the PADDLER to use the BODY to PULL.. not arms ! - The MORE BODY you use, the FASTER that big blade can move ( assuming you BURY the WHOLE Blade ) - if you're doing this in moving water then you can CHANGE GEARS at will by changing the paddle depth to modulate SPEED vs TORQUE and get the right COMBO for the Fastest Speed your FITNESS & TECHNIQUE allows.. everyone is different you have to find the RIGHT MIX.. at a TOLERABLE Heart Rate for YOU ! Most people without thinking it through do PASSIVE RESISTANCE workout.. like swimmers using DRAG SUITS, so they put BUNGEES, NOODLES, Loose rubber strap tied around the HULL and in OC-6.. our coaches would put TIRES on the nose of the canoe to create DRAG...Yes, you UP the workload but most serious athletes doing dryland STRENTGH Training as part of the HOMEWORK needed to get BETTER anyway ..... so SLOWING boat down does nothing for you but teach now to move the boat SLOWER... That's doesn't teach you how to go FASTER.. and if your training for a RACE, then you're going the WRONG way.. If you want to BUILD MUSCLE size that works BUT... SPRINT SPEED TRAINING is still a faster way to build muscle size.. look Olympic 100m Sprinters in RUNNING vs.. Long Distance Marathoners !
