This series is presented in partnership with Campaign for Social Science, the Social Research Association, and UK Evaluation Society. As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes more deeply integrated into UK public services — from healthcare and social support to policing, education and welfare — evaluators and social researchers are being called to respond. Beyond technical assessments and efficiency gains, critical questions are emerging about fairness, accountability, and the potential for AI to reinforce or challenge existing inequalities. This webinar will explore how AI systems are currently deployed in public service delivery, and what this means for those tasked with evaluating their impact. We will take a closer look at the risks and opportunities AI presents for equity and inclusion, and the role of evaluation in addressing systemic bias, safeguarding rights, and upholding public trust. Using real-world examples and case studies, we will examine: How AI can reproduce or exacerbate disparities in access, outcomes and treatment; The challenges of evaluating algorithmic systems within complex institutional settings; Frameworks and tools that centre equity, inclusion and public value in evaluation design including Elgon Social's self assessment workbook and associated framework; and Practical strategies for evaluators to work with affected communities and stakeholders. Join us to discuss how evaluation can help ensure that data-driven technologies work for everyone. Who is this for? This session is designed for public service evaluators, researchers, commissioners, policymakers and others interested in advancing ethical, inclusive and transparent approaches to AI evaluation in the public sector.
