Did you know you’re allowed to complain? Not just vent on social media. Not just gripe to a neighbour. I mean formally. If you believe a member of council has violated the Code of Conduct, there’s an actual, regulated process for that. And it’s laid out step by step in municipal bylaw. Today, we’re talking about: Why every municipality is required by the Local Governance Act to have a Code of Conduct What council members sign and agree to after they’re elected The difference between an informal complaint and a formal complaint What qualifies as grounds for a complaint Why anonymous complaints aren’t permitted Why this process must happen in open session, not behind closed doors There’s a big difference between being offended and identifying a specific breach of conduct. The complaint form requires you to: Identify the exact section of the Code you believe was violated Provide dates, times, and details Attach supporting documentation Put your name to it That’s intentional. It protects fairness for everyone involved. This isn’t about stirring up conflict; it's about accountability. If we’re going to rebuild trust in local government, residents need to understand: What behaviour is expected How concerns are raised How the process works What transparency you’re entitled to And yes, we need a clearer, more accessible municipal website so this information isn’t buried in legal language and hard-to-find PDFs. Tomorrow, we’ll walk through what happens after a formal complaint is filed and how the process unfolds from there. 👉 Visit https://buildupststephen.ca for priorities, commitments, and the action plan. 🗳️ Election Day is May 11 — Let’s build a better St. Stephen together. 📌 Stay Informed.
