(11 Sep 2019) More than 300 miners on a union strike clashed with police in the streets of Lima on Wednesday. Demonstrators wearing helmets and bright vests marched while carrying signs and waving flags. Police in riot gear fired tear gas canisters at the protesters. The strike was called by the national federation of mining workers which seeks to improve wages through collective bargaining with companies. Juan Mamani, a miner taking part in the protest, said they were protesting against plans to cut benefits and arbitrary dismissals. "They want to take away our rights so we are protesting," Mamani said. The federation brings together about 45,000 members, according to their figures. The strike was declared illegal by the Peruvian Ministry of Labor earlier this week. The country, a major global exporter of minerals, is the world's second-largest producer of copper and the sixth-largest gold producer.
