Roger Sayer plays Fête Op. 51 by Jean Langlais. Langlais was a French organist and modernist composer. He was organiste titulaire at the Basilica of Sainte-Clotilde in Paris from 1945-88, and also held teaching posts at the National Institute for Blind Children and the Schola Cantorum, a private music conservatoire. He was a prolific composer and, while he is best known for his works for organ and choir, his output also includes music for instrumental, orchestral and chamber ensembles. His music is characterised by rich modal harmonies and complex rhythms, with melodies often based on Gregorian chants. Written in 1946, Fête was Langlais's first composition after the war, and captures a feeling of joy and celebration in fast-moving chords, interspersed with dance-like solos and lively rhythmic patterns in the pedals. Like much of his other music, this work is full of fragments of modes and Gregorian chant, particularly in this case through the use of the Lydian Mode. Please like, share and subscribe.
