This video is the 2nd in a series of 3 videos about food and feeding. This video briefly covers the types of feed available and how to choose those best suited for use in a biOrb. Fish feeds can be broadly categorised into the following types: COMMERCIAL FOODS. These are the type of food widely available on the shelves of your local aquarium supplier. They typically consist of flake or pellet based foods. They may include options of being: floating, sinking or slow sinking! With a biOrb fast avoid sinking feeds! Commercial feeds also include frozen/preserved natural foods. These will be available from your local aquarium shop. Such foods are often supplied in trays with individual small quantities of feed. This allows a small amount to be defrosted and fed to your fish. Typical feeds include frozen daphnia, mosquito larvae, bloodworm and brine shrimps. Most of these are also available as "preserved" products which don't require freezing. LIVE FOODS. Live foods can be purchased, reared and maintained in a container. A suitable number of these organisms can be extracted and fed to your fish. A typical live food is daphnia. VEGETABLES. Although there are a number of commercial feeds which are vegetable based it is best to go with the real thing. Many fish like to nibble on vegetables! Typical vegetable foods include cucumber, carrot (par boiled) and shelled peas (i.e. peas with outer skin removed). Vegetables are a really good thing to add to your tank as they help to support a healthy fish digestive system. Cucumber tends to float, which makes it easier to remove from the tank afterwards! The food best suited for feeding will vary according to the fish you have and whether your fish have a tendency to be "carnivores" (animal/insect protein), herbivores (plant based) or omnivores (anything goes!). But it isn't always straightforward! Most tropical fish are omnivores. Most "livebearer" species are omnivores. Mollies and Platies are omnivores but they also need a high level of plant based foods. It is certainly worth getting a vegetable based food to give them every few days! Guppies tend to be omnivores, but show a tendency to be carnivorous. Species such as Betta are mainly carnivores but can also show omnivorous tendencies. Herbivores are typically algae eaters such as suckermouth catfish. If you have an aquarium containing fixed dietary requirements, don't worry! Most commercial suppliers supply specialised foods for certain species. If your tank has a mix of carnivorous fish and herbivores try giving an insect based feed and one day and then algae flakes on the next and keep rotating these feeds. Alternatively try adding add a small piece of cucumber or a couple of shelled peas to the tank for those fish needing plant foods. Nearly all aquarium fish will go crazy for live foods (especially daphnia and mosquito larvae) and they are a really great and healthy food source. But provide these foods to fish as a treat... rather than as a daily feed. It is best to use good quality commercial feeds and to vary the foods given! The following fish foods are what I feed my fish to vary the feed each day: TetraMin (flakes): https://amzn.to/3vDW4tz Hikari Micro Pellets (semi-floating): https://amzn.to/3EM1Ygh Fluval Bug Bites: https://amzn.to/3LhUB2W Vitalis Tropical Flakes or XS pellets: https://amzn.to/3vJr9MD FishScience Vegetable Flake Food: https://amzn.to/3OZqKyc It is always best to purchase food in small quantities/ packaging to ensure the food stays fresh!.
