Sit back, relax, and enjoy some footage from high up in the Italian Alps - an important migratory stopover site for Eurasian Dotterels during fall migration from their Scandinavian breeding grounds to their wintering sites in the oases of northern Africa. Since 2019, Bart Kempenaers and his research group have collaborated with local Italian ornithologists to deploy miniaturized satellite tags on Eurasian Dotterels (CItalian: "piviere tortolino", German: "Mornellregenpfeifer") passing through the Alps in an effort to understand the species' migratory routes and scheduling. The footage shown here was taken during our 2019 field campaign in August. This fieldwork was funded by the Max Planck Society.
