A noninvasive diagnostic exam that uses ultrasound to produce images in the pelvis. The transducer sends the reflected sound waves to a computer, which makes them into an image shown on a video screen. Bones may block other organs from being seen. Air-filled organs such as the intestines can make the image less clear. The images may include the bladder and sex organs. • female pelvic organs: The ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, endometrium, cervix, vagina, and vulva. • male pelvic organs: The ductus deferens, seminal vesicles, ejaculatory ducts, and prostate gland. (Types) • Transabdominal ultrasound: The transducer is passed back and forth over the pelvic region. It is commonly done in women to look for large uterine fibroids or other problems. • Transvaginal ultrasound: The transducer is shaped to fit into the vagina. It may be done along with transabdominal ultrasound to see the whole pelvic area. It is done to look for problems with fertility or pregnancy. Sometimes, biopsy may be taken with small tools inserted through the vagina during the procedure. - hysterosonogram: Sees the inside of the uterus by filling the uterus with fluid during the process. • Transrectal ultrasound: The transducer is shaped to fit into the rectum. It is done to look for rectal sphincter problems such as incontinence. It is also done to see the male reproductive organs. Sometimes, biopsy may be taken with small tools inserted through the rectum during the procedure.
