Stripes Theatre Company Rugby Methodist Church 07-11-1992 Jules and Karen Almost two decades ago, we developed this twenty minute piece based on a certain sporting event. It killed us doing it, so we put it at the end of our show. In this early form, we included an opening ceremony, and summer and winter games, but with no narrative. Looking at it now, I can see its flaws. We seem to end every section by falling on the floor. Nevertheless, we quite liked the theme of the item, and decided to expand it into a full hour long piece about the whole history of sporting endevour, from cave dwellers, to a modern Games. This featured a wonderful voice over narrative provided by John Talbot and written by Stephen Deal and was toured throughout 1993. "A fast and funny show that is the definitive guide to all sports everywere. From track and field, to the ski slope via the swimming pool and the gym; No muscle is left unsprained, no ligament untorn. With one eye on the gold medal, and the other on a lucrative sponsorship deal, simply taking part is not enough. The goal is to win. The aim to humiliate your opponent. No-one remembers who came second." We only did a guide video for ourselves from a fixed point. The lighting rather overpowered the VHS camera, so it's hard to see our expressions, which are largly smug, or triumphant, or a bit dim. Basically, our hapless athletes do their best, but are thwarted by ineptness. Karen and I were not long out of theatre school, so we were still very experimental in devising this. You decide what works.
