A Catholic Philosophical View of the Crisis

A Catholic Philosophical view of the Crisis “1/4 of the nation’s population have attended stream religious services of some kind during lockdown. 1/5 who attended had never been to Church. My concern is that this might replace the opportunity for the domestic devotional life.” Sebastian Morello a Catholic Philosopher who works for the Archdiocese of Southwark speaks about his experiences of Life Under Lockdown from the perspective of a Catholic parent and his hopes for the growth of the devotional life during Lockdown. “What this pandemic has done by keeping us in our homes together has provided the opportunity to establish a daily devotional life, to read the scriptures, say prayers of intercession. Devotional life is the antidote to this crisis in catechetics. I hope the devotional life amongst Catholic families is growing during this pandemic” “I hope that Catholic parents spending so much time with their children, in the domestic arena, hopefully saying prayers, that they will rediscover their role as primary educators for their children. There is no secret there is a crisis in catechesis. You cannot find a substitution that can only be fulfilled by the parent – to instruct their child in their faith” Morello also spoke about his journey from Anglicanism to the Catholic Church and his friendship with the late Sir Roger Scruton and why Sir Roger never made the same journey Sebastian did in crossing the Tiber: “It’s very difficult to pin down what Roger meant by God. He did love the Bible but he loved it …as one of the great works mythology which had contributed to the forming the western civilisation which he loved… Obviously we would want to argue that the difference between holy writ an the great works of antiquity which we treasure thanks to the Benedictine monks in the dark ages. We’ve never seen an opposition in these works but we say they differ in kind. I was very surprised at his funeral… there was reading after reading of holy scripture, prayers in Latin, Ave maria, the whole service ended with the prayers of consecration by St Ignatius I was sitting in the pews thinking what the heck is going on here. I was very moved and edified by that experience, so maybe that was Roger’s last opportunity to tell us all that we had never really pinned him down.
