Ortman Drive regarding a schizophrenic man reportedly off his medication and acting erratically in the street. Deputies were initially contacted by the man’s mother through a 911 call, reporting escalating behavior. Before arriving at the home, deputies met with the mother at a nearby location to gather details. She explained that her 30-year-old son, Terry Washington Jr., had been experiencing a severe mental health episode and that all weapons, including knives, had been removed from the home. Upon arrival, deputies spoke with the man’s father, who stated that Terry was inside a bedroom with a knife. Deputies attempted to communicate with him for several minutes, but Washington suddenly exited the room, charging toward a deputy and attempting to stab him. In the struggle, Washington grabbed for the deputy’s firearm while swinging the knife. The deputy discharged his service weapon, striking Washington. Deputies immediately rendered medical aid until paramedics arrived and transported him to the hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. The involved deputy sustained lacerations to the head and was transported for treatment; he is expected to make a full recovery.
