One of the most intriguing aspects of Hellraiser is how the cenobites—those grotesque purveyors of pain and terror—weren’t originally meant to be front and center. When Clive Barker transitioned from cult author to director with his 1987 debut, Hellraiser, he and producer Christopher Figg intended the cenobites to stay largely in the shadows. They weren’t designed to be horror icons, and certainly not the kind of franchise figureheads that dominated the era, like Michael Myers or Freddy Krueger.
