Hello Cellists! Today’s study is probably only of interest if you play the cello, and even then it really isn’t one to want to listen to! However there are some interesting discussion points about the study, which deals with scales and arpeggios in thumb positions. Each line is a chromatic ascent of the same shape going through all 12 keys. The interest to the cellist is in the hand shape in the lower pitch compared with the very high pitch: are problems at both extremes of the register. The construct of each line is: a rising and falling major scale; a rising and falling major arpeggio; a rising and falling minor arpeggio; and finally a pivotal arpeggio which creates a dominant to the next key up! If you are not very used to using your thumb, you may need to protect it with tape! The only other tip is to ensure that you keep the left forearm fairly high in order to add strength into the hand and fingers.
