On December 25, 1599, Christmas Day, a village was established here and thus called Natal, the Portuguese term for Nativity. Since the sandy soil made it difficult to grow sugarcane like in other parts of Brazil, for centuries, this state raised cattle to pull carts and for beef. This beef is what they call today "carne de sol" meaning sun meat. The largest petroleum reserves are also in this state, Rio Grande de Norte. Natal, Brazil's northeast city has the closest distance to Europe and Africa thus making it a strategic location during World War 2, when the United States set up a air base with thousands of American soldiers just outside the city. This made a big influence on the Brazilians of Natal as well as growing the population from 40,000 before the war to 80,000 after the war. Parnamirim becames the largest American military base outside of the United States. It allowed Brazilians from all over the country to find jobs in Natal. Years later Natal became a city port exporting cotton, wax, and tungstenium ore. So how is Natal today? As of 2022 Natal has removed many restricitons to allow tourism to return. Ponta Negra is the most touristic area with nicer beaches compared to the North of Natal, where you will find Praia dos Artisas and Praia de Maiame. As you can see the beaches of this area have rougher waters than Ponta Negra so it's better for surfing and fishing. I only spent one afternoon there. Now back to Ponta Negra. My first impressions were that the city looks modern, nice and clean. When I stayed by Avenida Ponta Negra, I was greeted by several people walking around but it didn't happen in other parts. The weather was hot and humid but that's all of northeast brazil. I've made another video with places to eat and party in Natal so watch that. I really liked this area because everything was within a few blocks of walking including: the beach, two gyms, restaurants and bars but..... there was one very disappointing part. No grocery store nearby. Thanks for watching and check out my channel for more video of Brazil! #natal
