In this watercolor demo, follow me as I paint some little butterflies around a curly red headed fairy. These tips on how to deal with fear as an artist come from my own experiences, those of my artist friends, and of my students. I hope they help remind you that you aren't alone in sometimes feeling pressure, anxiety, fear, procrastination, when it comes to making art. Just sit down and draw something, anything. It's okay if it's not perfect, it will be one step further in a good direction. The Five Tips 1. Get Used To The Fear: Accept that with each new learning curve you will have new challenges you need to face. So if you keep facing new struggles, that means you are learning and improving. Getting used to this will help manage the fear we can feel when we are struggling with a concept or project. Art isn't something you learn and then you start painting like a master, it's something you have to constantly work at. 2. Establish Clear and Flexible Goals: First you need to know your baseline, then go from there. Aim for goals that challenge you, but only a little bit. This way you build up confidence through these little "wins" and then you can face bigger challenges. And if your goal is set too high, sometimes it can be too much to handle, so don't be shy to change your goal if you need to, lower or raise it as needed! 3. Manage Your Resistance: Get rid of as many blocks as you can, anything that's getting in your way. Things that make you procrastinate, or make you less excited to work. Design your mind and your space in a way that facilitates get down straight to work. 4. Let Go of Being Perfect: The only painter who never made a mistake is the one who never made a brushstroke. Go out there and make some mistakes...it's okay, I promise! 5. Get Back To Your Joy: Are you feeling overloaded with pressure after graduating art school? Or maybe from studying for a whole week and you're feeling burnt out? Go draw some things just for fun, go back to what you originally loved about art. This will help you relax and find that joy again. Book recommendations: The War of Art by S. Pressfield Art & Fear: Observations On the Perils (and Rewards) of Artmaking by Bayles / Orland
