About 94 years ago, Christianity was introduced in Viswema village, located about 20 km from Nagaland. In the run-up to celebrating 100 years of Christianity in the village, residents under the banner of Viswema Baptist Church conducted a mass fruit tree plantation drive of over 7,000 fruit trees in the village. Organised by the Viswema Baptist Church with the theme “Lo-The-Wu” meaning “To plant-To grow-To bear fruits”, hundreds of residents gathered at St Joseph’s Higher Secondary School ground on Tuesday to start the initiative. “Christianity entered Viswema about 94 years ago and in 2028, we are going to celebrate 100 years. Keeping that in mind, and aware of the fact that many trees have been cut, we decided to plant fruit trees this year for which we started planting nurseries last year,” Dr Hovithal, convenor of the Centenary Planning Committee. Interestingly, different Christian denominations, and non-Christians, including the All Nagaland Indigenous faith Council, an animist association, took part in the drive. He said that the intention is to celebrate “Christ in Viswema” and as a symbolic gesture, village leaders, religious leaders and other leaders were given a name tag on the plant tree that was planted. He informed that seven fruit tree varieties were planted along the roadsides and at the ground where the event was held. The Entrepreneurs Associates (EA) also donated 1000 tree tomato saplings. Sothu informed that the fruit trees would further be distributed to the locals for plantation at their homes. w As for the 100-year centenary celebration, he said the theme would be ‘Waiting upon the Lord.’ Plant protection barricades were also donated by the residents towards the initiative. To ensure that all planted fruit trees grow, he said that locals would also continue to take care of the trees planted in public places. He said that the idea to plant fruit trees was brainstormed as it gives the double advantage of rejuvenating nature and bears fruits, improving the environment, and helping improve the economy. Sothu added that it was a challenge to find fruit tree saplings for the nursery as many fruit trees are now disappearing. He hoped that with the initiative, the younger generation will be benefited. Besides the plantation of fruit trees, he informed that beautification activities will be conducted in the following years. 77-year-old Yose Chaya, adviser to the All Nagaland Indigenous faith Council who took part in the drive, said, “Today, in the name of the village, I am sowing a wild apple plant.” As he took part in the initiative undertaken by the Viswema Baptist Church, he said added ” I am planting the tree with the hope that I will one day, get to eat the fruit, as I not so old. If the plant grows well, it should bear fruits in about 8-9 years. I hope for good health till the day the centenary is celebrated.” Rev Dr Atsi Dolie, executive director of Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC), who graced the occasion as the special guest, lauded the initiative undertaken by the local Church body. He said it is a “great start” as plants give back to the world as it grows by bearing fruits and improving the environment. He added that the plantation of fruit trees should remind the people that humans should also prepare to bear good fruits spiritually. CEO of Entrepreneurs Associates, Neichute Doulo, said that the EA donated 1000 tree tomato saplings to the Church as part of its initiative to plant 200 million fruit trees by 2025. He informed that so far, 3.60 lakh fruit trees have been planted, for which Viswema village has also been a major contributor. With the action of the residents, he said that Nagaland will witness positive change. Rev Dr Zelhou Keyho, NBCC general secretary also addressed the gathering before he pronounced the blessings for the initiative to kick off. #EastMojo #EastStory #NorthEastIndia ***** Subscribe: / @eastmojoofficial ***** Visit our website: https://www.eastmojo.com/ Facebook: / eastmojo Twitter: / eastmojo Instagram: / east.mojo *****
