The Pearl Session Studio Classic is a great choice. I just bought this (May 2016), it’s a 2014 model in Pearl’s #103 Piano Black finish. Upgrades are Pearls die cast hoops on all toms along with Pearl Aluminum Optimounts on the 10 & 12. I added Remo ebony heads on the bottoms for a great black on black look. They are 6 ply Birch & Kopar (I'm really not sure what Kopar is!). 45 degree sharp bearing edges, pinstripes on top. They were recorded with my main Masterworks set and I didn't tweak any settings. These are the same EQ/reverb that are on all my other recent videos. And those settings are only enhancments to make each drum stand out. It didn't come with a snare, so the one set up with it is a D-drum 14x6.5 brass hand hammered which sounds really nice. The one I'm actually playing is my standard Masterworks snare. I'm very impressed with it. I used it for a memorial day gig and got many compliments. So if you're wanting to get a great kit and not spend too much, check out the Pearl Session Studio Classic.
