Throughout history, relations between Brazil and the United States have been characterized by alignment, disagreements, cooperation, and rivalry. Brazil and the US have almost 200 years of diplomatic relations. In 1824, the US was the second country to recognize the independence of Brazil, right after Argentina (1823). In this video, we prepared a brief summary of the history of US-Brazil relations, from the beginning to the present day. We will see how the two countries built an alliance relationship during the tenure of the Baron of Rio Branco as the Brazilian Minister of Foreign Affairs (1902-1912) and fought side by side against the Axis troops in World War II. In the following decades, the two countries went through periods of alignment – as in the Dutra (1946-1951) and Castelo Branco (1964-1967) administrations – and also some moments of divergences and rivalries. The US is currently Brazil's second largest trading partner and the main source of foreign investment in Brazil.
