Falling on the eighth day of the 12th lunar month, the day is commonly celebrated by cooking and eating hodgepodge congee made of various ingredients to pray for a good harvest and good fortune. Temples in Shanghai have canceled their traditional porridge-distribution events for this year’s Laba Festival due to the pandemic. Why not make it at home with the authentic recipe？ Clean and soak most of the ingredients in advance. When the water is at boiling point, put most of the ingredients in and boil for an hour. Make sure to lower the heat when it boils to 100°C. Don’t forget to keep stirring or it’ll stick onto the bottom. Usually, laba porridge have eight ingredients including beans, dates and peanuts. Now to make it more nutritious, we add over 10 ingredients. 5 minutes before it’s ready, put other things like corn flakes, white fungi and sugar.
