Dr. Pratima Sharma is a Professor of Medicine, Transplant Hepatologist, and Health Services Researcher with joint appointments at the University of Michigan and the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System. A dedicated clinician and investigator, her work focuses on complications of portal hypertension, renal dysfunction before and after liver transplantation—particularly hepatorenal syndrome—and disparities in liver transplant allocation and access. Dr. Sharma earned her medical degree from University College of Medical Sciences & Guru Teg Bahadur in 1992. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine at Bronx Lebanon Hospital Center, followed by fellowships in Gastroenterology at the University of Michigan and in Advanced Hepatology & Transplantation at the Mayo Clinic. She is board certified in Gastroenterology and Transplant Hepatology. An active member of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) for over two decades, Dr. Sharma has served on multiple committees and Special Interest Groups (SIGs), and currently serves as Chair of the Liver Transplant and Surgery SIG. Her research has significantly influenced evidence-based changes in liver allocation policy. The current state-of-the-art lecture was presented at the INEDSYS Hepatology club on May 31, 2025.
