ARTIST: Ashley Cook SONG: The Waters Of Lake Eyre WRITERS: Wilf Elliott BIO: Ashley Cook is a celebrated Australian Bush Balladeer from Central Queensland, widely admired for his authentic storytelling and deep connection to the outback, its people, and its way of life. Raised on his family’s property near Thangool, Ashley grew up living the very experiences he now captures in song—earning him a reputation as a “real deal” bush artist whose music rings true because it comes from lived experience. His work draws strong influence from iconic figures such as Slim Dusty and Buddy Williams, and he is often compared to these legends for his traditional style, heartfelt delivery, and commitment to preserving Australia’s bush ballad heritage. Across his career, Ashley has earned multiple honours, including being named Queensland Bush Balladeer of the Year several times, receiving a Brumby Award for Bush Ballad of the Year, and being inducted into the Hands of Fame in 2019. In 2025, he was further recognised as the Bush Balladeer of the Year in the inaugural Australian Bush Ballad Awards, cementing his place among the nation’s most respected bush storytellers. He has recorded several albums with LBS Music under the guidance of renowned producer Lindsay Butler OAM, releasing both original works and meaningful tribute recordings. Ashley’s current single, “The Waters of Lake Eyre,” written by esteemed Queensland songwriter Wilf Elliott, explores the dramatic ebb and flow of Australia’s largest ephemeral lake. The song reflects the lake’s rare transformations—from vast salt pan to breathtaking floods that ignite vivid pink and orange hues—mirroring Ashley’s enduring passion for sharing the beauty, resilience, and spirit of the Australian landscape through song.
