Originally the Northern Special Region’s detention site from 1971, its activities slowed in early April 1975 as the Khmer Rouge prepared to seize Phnom Penh. By April 17, the center was dismantled. During the civil war, the prison held, interrogated, and tortured people from areas controlled by the Lon Nol government. Hundreds of detainees died there. Kaing Guek Eav (Duch) gained his early experience in prison management, torture, and execution at M-13 before applying these methods even more brutally at S-21. For Cambodians, it opens the door to huge swathes of their memory. Co-founded by Cambodian filmmakers Rithy Panh and Ieu Pannakar, the Bophana Center collects image and sound archives related to Cambodia and gives the general public free access to this unique heritage. The Center also trains young Cambodians in the fields of cinema, audiovisual and new media, to enhance their understanding of the creation process and inspire meaningful productions about their own culture.
