Author and social enterprise specialist Kerryn Krige, together with her team, works to develop a social economy policy for South Africa. Interestingly, the team has gone about this task by sourcing ideas from the ground up. They have spoken to over seven hundred and sixty people, in seventy districts, in more than twenty towns, in all the nine provinces of South Africa. Kerryn shares four crystal clear insights on how the lessons learned from this research can help us build an inclusive economy. One, why is it important? Because the social economy is the quickest mechanism we have to develop an inclusive one. Two, what is it? The social economy represents a diverse range of not-for-profit organisations that exists to deliver social good. Three, how does it work? Trust, it turns out, is the glue that holds the social economy together. Kerryn’s fourth insight is about the importance of avoiding what she calls the inertia of the negative need of now and focusing on the momentum of moving forward. The question to ask, she says, is where do you want your community to be in thirty years, or in one generation’s time?
