Philology of another Future: Revisiting Ernst Trumpp and German Orientalism | GS Sahota

PRESENTER: G.S. Sahota Associate Professor, Aurora Chair in Sikh and Punjabi Studies, Department of Literature, UC Santa Cruz HOST/CONVENER: Neilesh Bose Associate Professor and Canada Research Chair in Global and Comparative History, Department of History, University of Victoria DESCRIPTION: Walter Benjamin suggestively remarked that philology should be grasped not as a science or history of language but rather as a “history of terminology.” This presentation will seek to explore what a turn to terminology might mean for a study of the impact of German Orientalism on categories of Sikh thought in the wake of colonialism. After laying out some general characteristics of German thought vis à vis India, the talk will focus on the interpretive frameworks Ernst Trumpp (1828-1885) brought to bear on his influential translation and interpretation of Sikh scripture and the role of Nanak as the founder (Stifter) of the Sikh faith. The presentation will conclude with some notions of what an alternative philology – and a different terminology – may look like in the context of the contemporary critique of humanism that unwittingly threatens to cast aside the historical experiences, interpretive approaches, and intellectual frameworks of the those deemed less than human in the age of imperialism. ------------------------- This talk was presented as part of CAPI's "Global South Colloquium" program's "Punjab in the World: History, Politics, and Migration" lecture series https://www.uvic.ca/research/centres/... Recorded 27 January 2022
