Finding the Next Binding Pin: Once a pin is set, the internal dynamics of the lock change, and another pin will become the new binding pin. The picker then moves to the next binding pin, repeating the process. This process of finding the binding pin and setting it is repeated for all the pins in the lock. The "picking order" is dynamic and depends on the specific tolerances of that individual lock. Opening the Lock: When all the pins are correctly set at the shear line, the lock's plug will rotate, and the lock will open. Decoding the Bitting: As each pin is picked and set, the Lishi tool's design allows the user to read the exact depth of that pin using the numerical scale on the tool. This is the "decoding" function. By noting the depth for each pin position, the locksmith can then accurately cut a new key for that lock, without ever needing the original key or disassembling the lock.
