This action came after a special court in Imphal acquitted seven individuals who were arrested in a drugs haul case from 2018. Thounaojam Brinda, who was recognized for her continuous efforts against drug smuggling and sales in the border state, was the first officer from the Narcotics and Affairs of Border Bureau to receive a state gallantry award. However, she decided to return the medal and wrote a letter to Chief Minister N Biren Singh explaining her reasons. In her letter, Brinda cited the court's observation that the drugs probe was ""unsatisfactory,"" leading to the acquittal of the accused individuals. She expressed moral concern about not fulfilling her duty as per the wishes of the Criminal Justice Delivery System. Therefore, she considered herself undeserving of the honor bestowed upon her and returned the medal to the state Home Department. Brinda suggested that the award be given to a more deserving and loyal police officer.
