The 'best' Arenal Volcano hike? Observatory Lodge trails, La Fortuna | Costa Rica

#arenalvolcanohike #lafortuna #costarica Spoiler alert: the Observatory Park near Arenal Volcano in La Fortuna.....isn't the best park if you want to hike around Arenal Volcano (in my opinion). Whilst you can't actually hike up Arenal Volcano, if you're looking for trails around the La Fortuna area, there are 4 main options: The Arenal Volcano National Park Arenal Natura Ecological Park (https://arenalnatura.com) Arenal 1968 (https://arenal1968.com/) The Observatory (https://www.arenalobservatorylodge.com/) We went on a recommendation that the Observatory trails were the best Arenal volcano hike option, and with a $10-$12 entry fee, we set off. There's over 11km of trails involved, with multiple options. The first one is around the frog pond with a 28m tall viewing platform, from which you can then embark on the more extensive trail network. This vlog should give you a flavour of the experience. Overall, there's a little too much open farmland for my liking and whilst there are supposedly over 500 species of birds, we only saw a few. The Arenal Volcano national park apparently has more areas of walking though lava fields (Arenal Volcano last erupted in 2010) and I suspect that the other parks have hiking trails that involve a little more rainforest! There are a few waterfalls and a hanging bridge that you can see in the Observatory park and the views from the platform (and the main restaurant) are fairly spectacular. However, it is the furthest park away from La Fortuna town and for the 3-4 hour investment you are probably better off trying out one of the other parks. There is some drone footage of Arenal Volcano as well as some of the trails and the waterfall, but beware, the drone does make it look better than it actually was! Perhaps you are better off doing the hike before the other attractions such as La Fortuna Waterfall or the Mistico Hanging Bridges, that way your expectations aren't warped. Also, don't let me put you off, if you want to have a half day walk/hike then it is perfectly fine! No sloths were seen....
