For more information about Safecast, read the article: http://radiationprevention.com/crowds... In their own words; "Safecast is a global project working to empower people with data, primarily by mapping radiation levels and building a sensor network, enabling people to both contribute and freely use the data collected". This information is collected both inside and outside of reported radioactive hot spots. Lead by founder and principal scientist Sean Bonner, the Safecast team is composed of engineers, technologists, scientists, creatives, web designers, and volunteers with wide ranging skill sets. Currently Safecast's goals include the completion of a global radiation map in an effort to baseline the planet, while monitoring the developing situation. In addition, Safecast will be measuring radiation levels in food, people, and soil, as well as outfitting future hardware iterations to include the ability to monitor air quality. To create this "living" global radiation map, Safecast intends to, and encourages others, to use an array of modern approaches in companionship to their custom geiger counter devices. Similar to methods employed by Google Street View, volunteers are actively driving through communities measuring radiation, experimenting with drones to record atmospheric conditions, creating static radiation detection networks, and repurposing the collected data to include additional layers of data to provide a clearer picture of how radiation might affect health, where food is and will be produced, and so on. All of this without any government assistance or much interference (other than the Japanese government stating not to trust "unofficial" radiation measurements like Safecast). Safecast was made possible through collabouration with members of Tokyo Hackerspace, the Ardruino community, RDTN.org, International Medcom, MIT Media Lab, and Keio University, among others.
