Among the basalt canyons, coulees, buttes, and plateaus of the Palouse--a roughly 19,000 sq. mi (50,000 sq. km), picturesque region in southeastern Washington and western Idaho--Palouse Falls stands out. Formed by the Missoula mega-floods of the Pleistocene epoch over 13,000 years ago, Palouse Falls consists of an upper fall with a drop around 20 ft (6.1 m), and a lower fall with a drop of 198 ft (60 m). Its waters then flow through deep canyons to its confluence with the Snake River about 4 mi (6 km) downstream.
