Roll The Bones Bass Cover HD

According to Wikipedia, “Roll the Bones is the fourteenth studio album by Canadian rock band Rush, released in 1991. It was recorded at Le Studio in Morin-Heights, Quebec and McClear Place in Toronto, Ontario with Rupert Hine returning as producer.” It’s been a while since I posted a new Rush cover (or even a do-over Rush cover) so, when I sat down to do a Yes song the other morning, I recorded a few just for fun. This song brings to mind a number of different topics so let’s begin. Topic 1: I thought it was great that Geddy brought out so many different basses on the last tour and still sounded like “Geddy” on every one of them. He played a bunch of Jazz basses, a few Rickenbackers (even a hollow body 4005), a couple of Thunderbirds, a Zemaitis, and even a Precision or two. I never thought I’d see the day where he’d use a Precision, but, to my ears, the P-Bass he used on this song was the best sounding bass of the night - tight, punchy, focused…it sounded awesome. I would have love it if he’d have brought out the Wal for this song but, alas, he did not. I think this would have been the only period correct song for the Wal on the last tour anyway. He definitely should have brought out a Wal on the Clockwork Angels tour to use on all the Power Windows material they did. How cool would that have been? Anyway, there’s a larger lesson in there about “tone coming from your hands” and “every player is going to sound different on the same equipment” but I never listened to any of that advice, so why should you? Topic 2: It seems that on my original cover of this song I was overplaying the main riff (the filler notes in the first 3 bars and beyond) a bit. After listening to it live and then re-listening to it on the album, the open E note that I was starting the riff on didn’t seem to be there any longer and, to my ears, it sounded like he was just bending the G note a bit instead. I’m still learning. Also, if you’re wondering why I’m hovering over the bass like a vulture during the choruses it’s because, on the first take I did of this song, it felt fine when I was playing it but, after screening it for mistakes, I noticed that I was really laying back, dragging even, during the chorus sections. Even though that section seems to have more of a laid back feel to it, everything is still played right on the beat and it took some concentration to get that right. Apparently, hovering = concentrating. So I hovered. Topic 3: The bass is another Ibanez Roadstar II RB850 like the Red one I got a short while back which was like the White one I had a long while back. This one happens to be Purple. Why did I get this one? Well, Lynn and I will be celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary this year and were thinking about doing something special. I’d heard about this “Cruise To The Edge” Yes/Kansas/Prog Rock Music Cruise event and it looked interesting. You go on a cruise ship for 5 days with a bunch of prog bands who perform at various times. As I was looking further into the cruise I found out that they had this “prog-jam” program where people sign up in advance to play songs on their respective instruments with other passengers on the ship, unrehearsed. You even have to send in an audition clip to prove that you can play adequately. This seemed to be right up my alley. But then I got to thinking, “Well, what if I’m not comfortable playing on the loaner bass?” “Do I really want to go through the trouble of traveling with a bass?” Which lead to, “If I did bring a bass, which one would I risk bringing?” Which lead to, “What if I were to get another inexpensive bass to bring on the cruise?” Which lead to me getting this bass with a big idea about adding one of those Guild pick-ups between the two existing p/u’s in hopes of capturing a bit of what I like about the sound of the Guilds… We’re not 100% decided on the cruise thing, but, if we don’t go, it looks like I’m still on the hook for doing something special to celebrate our anniversary. Topic 3-A: So this is the same model bass I was playing 25 years ago when Lynn and I got married and this album came out and I made a cassette copy to bring on our honeymoon which included a stop (actually two stops) to the Los Angeles Bass Centre (one of the only shops in the country that stocked Wal basses) to buy a Wal bass (which I did not) and, upon returning from our honeymoon, saw Rush on this tour at the Garden which was, in my opinion, one of the top 3 best sounding shows by them ever. Topic 4: I decided to get fancy for the keyboard-bass/rap section by breaking out my old EBS Octabass pedal in order to demonstrate why I’ve never been a big “pedal” guy. I’ve always had a tendency to step on them either too early, too late, or, sometimes, not at all. In this case, I was too early.
