Tiger Hobbies Limited Present Episode 7 of our history of Strategic Bombing, this time we look the development of the first atomic weapons. I have had an interest in this part of WW2 since qualifying as a Radiation Protection Supervisor ( Minor Sources) while serving in the Supply Trade in the Royal Air Force. At school I never did physics or would not know if the periodical tables slapped me round the face, so that course was a bit of a challenge. It was only a short course but my brain was hurting. We cover the dawn of radiation in the late 19th Century, with the likes of Curie, and later various Mad Scientists, there always Mad Scientist as they worked though study and experiments of Atomic Physics, to the realisation by the 1930’s, the possibility of Atomic Weapons, who would be first to the Buckets of Sunshine. Us plucky brits with our developments in sheds, to the massive industrial complex of the USA in 1940 and the Manhattan Project, to test firing in New Mexico called Trinity in Jul 1945, to the dropping of those weapons by the B-29 Superfortress of the 509th Composite group of the USAAF. Finally with my former qualifications as a RPS, we will look at two radiation accidents in 1945 and 1946 the Deghlian and Slotin Incidents, using the 1989 movie Fat Man and Little Boy staring John Cusack as a composite character based on the two Physicists, who become the most radiated men in the world at that time, with 5sv and 10sv respectively, but in 1964 some poor sod would get 100 Sieverts (Sv), a nuclear worker named Robert Peabody in 1964. In the next Episode the Buckets of Sunshine, go from Kiloton Buckets to Megaton Buckets, when we look at Strategic Bombing in the post war period. M.A.D. Mutually Assured Destruction.
