Rambles with Robin and Ruby - May 29, 2019, 19E8 19E8: Day 8: Robin and Ruby drive through farm land, badlands and salt lakes, from Ogema to Gull Lake, Saskatchewan. Robin is a 2015 T@B travel trailer. Ruby is a 2019 Subaru Outback. On day 8, we drove from Ogema to Gull Lake, Saskatchewan. One of the many interesting places we visited are the badlands in southern Saskatchewan. Bandlands are an amazing place, rich in different wildflowers, despite being desert-like. We also stopped at the Willow Bunch alkali lake. The alkali lakes are also amazing places to look at. They are home to migrating birds, amazing salt-tolerant wildflowers, and even salt-water shrimp! We stayed overnight at the Gull Lake Municipal Campground, complete with electricity, water, showers and toilets. Geological and other curiosities mentioned include: a) Big Muddy Valley, a glacial meltwater channel carved by melting glaciers about 15,000 years ago; b) Castle Butte, an “island” in the Big Muddy Valley badlands; c) Outlaw cowboy trail, organized by Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid; d) erosional rills in the badland clays and sandstone deposits; e) Richardson’s ground squirrels; f) Buffalo Bean plant; g) the race horse names Coronach; h) pronghorn; i) alkali lakes; and j) Western Glasswort plant. Also mentioned are: a) Ogema; b) Bengough; c) Coronach; d) Willow Bunch Lake; e) Assiniboia; f) Gull Lake; and g) Gull Lake Municipal Campground. Be sure to check out the “Rambled Thought”, which appears at the very end of the video. This Rambled Thought asks you to consider Saskatchewan as a tourist destination - the landscape, museums, and people are amazing. Andy Fyon
