EDIT: Sharyn Broni wrote: A squid beak was removed from the nest and not swallowed be the chick. BOK was likely slow to feed her new chick due to the large size of the food she had to give. The chick weigh 345g at this mornings weigh in. As Sharyn had predicted, Colin arrived soon after feeding time. He removed a handful of leftovers from the nest and placed the little one in the grass. I think it was a bit surprised to land next to, and not under, its mom. Plateau chick weighed 275g this morning, but BOK later fed the chick. Meanwhile, WYL is some 500km away foraging off the east coast of the South Island. Info by Sharyn Broni, Ranger (DOC) WYL and BOK at Plateau nest. The chick has hatched, after spending 4 days in the incubator to protect the vulnerable hatchling from fly strike the Plateau chick has hatched weighing 288g. For reference this is a little less than a soda can and this chick is one of the smaller Royalcam chicks to hatch. BOK arrived at the nest yesterday afternoon and WYL fed the chick before he left for his foraging trip. The chick weighed 280g this morning. Feeds have been small so far but are expected to increase as the chick gets older. The chick will have a health check and be weighed twice a day, weather allowing, for the first 5 days then once a day for the following 5 days before moving to weekly weighing.
