1988 was a big year Lamborghini, and for the Countach in particular, because it was the company’s 25th anniversary. To celebrate it, they created a special 25th anniversary of the Countach. This anniversary version made some big changes to the vehicle’s design, changes that not every Lamborghini fan was happy about. This was despite the fact that this new version was designed by legendary car designer Horacio Pagani, who later went on to create his own supercar company. Mechanically, the 25th anniversary of the Countach was similar to the 5000QV that was released three years prior, but the body experienced some big changes. Many of these changes were actually pretty practical and they included improved rear air boxes that were enlarged and mounted lengthwise instead of crosswise. This necessitated a change in the vents covering them since they had to be lengthwise as well. Since the airboxes were located behind the radiators, this change improved the airflow of the radiators. Another practical, but unpopular, feature was the opening to the primary rear air intake ducts, which featured fin strakes that many people felt looked too similar to the styling of the Ferrari Testarossa. They improved engine cooling, but their similarity to Lamborghini’s automotive rival left many unimpressed. Other changes included rear bumpers and narrower tail lights. Despite the unpopularity of these changes among the Lamborghini faithful, the 25th anniversary Countach sold extremely well. They had the highest production volume of all the Countachs and were the most refined. However, many Lambo fans preferred the rawness of the other Countachs because they felt that it was a purer distillation of what a true supercar should be: untamed, impractical, terrifying, and exhilarating in equal measure.
