This color-enhanced version of the classic 1951 war film "Go For Broke!" features improved audio for a superior viewing experience. Directed by Robert Pirosh, this film tells the powerful true story of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, a segregated U.S. Army unit of Japanese-American soldiers who fought in World War II. Starring Van Johnson as Lieutenant Michael Grayson and featuring several actual veterans of the 442nd RCT in key roles, including Lane Nakano, George Miki, Akira Fukunaga, Ken K. Okamoto, Henry Oyasato, and Harry Hamada. The Historical 442nd Regimental Combat Team: The 442nd RCT was composed almost entirely of second-generation Japanese Americans, known as Nisei. Its motto, "Go For Broke," is a Hawaiian pidgin phrase meaning to risk everything, to "shoot the works". It is renowned as the most decorated unit for its size and length of service in U.S. military history. The team earned over 18,000 individual decorations, including: 21 Medals of Honor Over 4,000 Purple Hearts 7 Presidential Unit Citations Many of the soldiers volunteered directly from internment camps, where the U.S. government had confined their families. The film climaxes with the unit's heroic rescue of the "Lost Battalion," the 1st Battalion of the 141st Infantry Regiment, which was surrounded by German forces in the Vosges Mountains. This film is a significant piece of cinema history, offering a positive portrayal of Japanese Americans during a period of widespread prejudice.
