The film climaxes with the unit's heroic rescue of the "Lost Battalion," the 1st Battalion of the 141st Infantry Regiment, which was surrounded by German forces in the Vosges Mountains. This film is a significant piece of cinema history, offering a positive portrayal of Japanese Americans during a period of widespread prejudice.
