In August 1941, Allied forces launched Operation Gauntlet, a little-known mission in the Arctic during World War II. The objective was to evacuate civilians and destroy vital coal mining infrastructure on Spitsbergen in the Svalbard islands. Led by the Royal Navy and supported by Canadian troops from the Canadian Army, the operation aimed to prevent Nazi Germany from using the Arctic coal resources and weather stations for military advantage. More than 2,000 Soviet miners and hundreds of Norwegian civilians were evacuated, while coal stockpiles, mines, and equipment were destroyed before Allied forces withdrew. Although rarely discussed, Operation Gauntlet became one of the earliest Allied operations in the Arctic theater of World War II.#WW2 #OperationGauntlet #ArcticWar #WorldWar2 #MilitaryHistory #Svalbard #WWIIHistory #HistoryDocumentary #RoyalNavy #WW2Operations
