Beetle (Type 1) transmissions are identified by the non-removable bell housing, and come in Swing Axle and IRS (Independent Rear Suspension) variants. Bus (Type 2) transmissions are identified by the removable bell housing, and come in 3, 5, and 6-rib variants, as counted by the number of ribs on the top of the transaxle case. 3 and 5 ribs are known as 002 transaxles, 6-rib transmissions are known as a 091 from a late-model bay window, or a 094 side-shift from a Vanagon. Bus transmissions overall have stronger internals, and have larger, stronger CV's - 100mm in a Bus transmission versus a Beetle's 90mm CV joints.
