UPDATE 25/10/16: Since making this video, I've discovered the Yonomi app. This can be used to bridge the gap between the Echo and other home automation products for which there is currently no official smart home skill. The great thing about this is that you can create custom routines which are discovered in the Alexa app as smart home devices. Once discovered, you can then control these 'devices' with simple "Alexa, turn on/off the..." commands, instead of "Alexa, tell the whatever to turn on/off the..." as is necessary with a custom Alexa skill. You can also create a routine that just sends a notification, so, together with Tasker/AutoNotification, this enables you to create a device that will fire whatever Tasker profiles you wish. So the Echo has been out in the states for some time now and I've been eagerly awaiting the release in the UK. I resisted the temptation to import one, and now it's finally here! I couldn't wait to set it up to control my home. I've got a few 2nd generation Echo Taps on order, too, so that (eventually) I'll be able to issue voice commands throughout the house. Out-of-the-box, the Echo supports an array of home automation products (Skills). For products for which there is no home automation skill, it is necessary to create your own (I have followed Jason Ratliff's awesome how-to guide here: https://github.com/jratliff681/EchoTa.... With a custom skill, you have to set up an 'invocation name'. Mine is 'The House', hence for my custom skill (which I'm using for 433 MHz devices), I have to use the phrase "Alexa, tell the house to...."
