[2023 Arts Creation Support Project Selected Work] Percussion Music Theater 《Blink》 – SORIPERCUSSION “One sees clearly only with the heart. What is essential is invisible to the eye.” — Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, The Little Prince ○ Are we truly living with our eyes open? What does it mean to open one’s eyes, to awaken? Many beings live with their eyes open, but humans need more than mere physical sight. Opening one’s eyes should be understood as a process of reflection, perception, and awakening—going beyond just seeing phenomena. In the post-COVID era, we live amid countless visual stimuli. In this fast-moving modern society, can we live while truly opening the “inner eye” of our mind, even as our physical eyes are open? Blinking tired eyes, let us instead close them and open our ears and hearts to the world. Through sound, acoustics, and music, this performance encourages each audience member to experience perception in their own way, allowing for deeper reflection and insight. ○ What can be seen when we listen? Everyone shares the same space, yet each moves while seeing something different. People on the subway, a family at home, pedestrians walking hastily… By temporarily letting go of everything we’re accustomed to seeing and focusing solely on sound, we sense what we usually overlook. Although we know that seeing is not everything, we are not accustomed to awakening the inner eye through our other senses. What are we missing? How can we discover the unseen? SORIPERCUSSION focuses on sound, on listening, to awaken inspiration in everyone living in contemporary society through their own senses. This performance transforms someone’s dreams, pain, or cries into moments of empathy, comfort, and communication—all expressed through the unique color of SORIPERCUSSION. Just as in the dramatic scene in Simcheongga where a blind man regains sight, the resonances and messages created by percussion awaken forgotten senses in the audience. Scene-by-Scene Musical Story and Expression #1 Star One The performance begins in darkness, with percussionists striking pebbles. A lone figure is set in the vast universe. The kkwaenggwari (small gong) plays a fast salpuri gutgeori rhythm, like igniting a fire. The figure remains alone—shouting, whispering. Then, from somewhere, the janggu (hourglass drum) can be heard. #2 Star Two Like a ray of hope in the dark, another sound emerges: the janggu. The kkwaenggwari now plays variations based on the samchae rhythm. The two instruments begin to harmonize, moving and conversing through music. #3 Star Three From a distant, isolated place, Western percussion—the snare drum and cymbals—resonate. The snare plays a gutgeori rhythm, yet with a distinct timbre. This scene amplifies traditional rhythms from Mujangdan and rearranges them creatively. #4 Star Four The snare, cymbals, kkwaenggwari, and janggu start an ensemble. Traditional rhythms meet new timbres, creating unexpected harmonies. Even when their timing is imperfect, the ensemble gradually synchronizes, producing a brighter, more musical atmosphere. This reinterprets a portion of Samjisong. #5 Star Five The once-lone kkwaenggwari is no longer alone. It meets others, converses, performs together, and supports one another—building a sense of community. Just as individual identity grows through society, individual musical voices blend to create harmony. This scene is adapted from Urban Suite. #6 Star Six An audience member joins the stage performers. The stage expands as performers move between the audience and stage. Deep daego sounds collide with Western bass drums, exploring variations based on seungmu dance rhythms. This reimagines Yanggodokgyeong’s seungmu motifs with greater elaboration. #7 Star Seven Having relied on sound in darkness, the audience becomes accustomed to the dark. A moment of realization occurs, as truths hidden from sight are revealed. The awakening of the inner eye mirrors the dramatic moment in Simcheongga when the blind man regains sight. This climactic scene expresses emotional upheaval through silence and ecstatic sounds, inspired by Jeju Yeongdeung Gut, interpreted uniquely by SORIPERCUSSION.
