What is cholecystitis?

In this video, Dr. Fullington addresses the question, “What is cholecystitis?” Cholecystitis is a term used to describe inflammation of the gallbladder. The most common cause of gallbladder symptoms is gallstones blocking the duct of the gallbladder. If the stone becomes lodged in the exit of the gallbladder, it can become inflamed and quite painful. In acute (abrupt onset) cholecystitis, where inflammation can be severe, the gallbladder is typically removed within a few days of symptoms developing. Cholecystitis is also used to describe a long period of time where the gallbladder is mildly irritated, called chronic cholecystitis.
