Less than a month after coming in 2nd at my first 24 hour race, the Oakwood 24, my friend Eric once again convinced me to jump into another ultramarathon format I had never tried before. Four days before the event I found myself emailing the race director, Tom Clifford, to find out if there had been any openings for the Southern Tour Backyard Ultra, a Last Person Standing ultramarathon. Luckily Tom had an opening and I was in! Much like Oakwood I showed up without any real expectations and without a crew. I had heard that the course record was 26 hours (108.342 miles) and thought I'd like to try for that but I didn't know anything about the course and I didn't have any experience with the format so I didn't know how feasible that would be. For those who are unaware, in a Backyard Ultra you start a 4.167 mile loop on the hour, every hour until there is only one runner left. That runner must then complete one more lap than 2nd to last person in order to be declared the winner. Luckily for me Eric had a friend crewing for him, Jason Daniels, who would jump back and forth between our two tents to help me out, even though I had never met him before. In addition to Jason my friend Scott from@ScottRunsnStuff jumped in to crew me when he wasn't running one of his many legs of the 50 mile relay. I can honestly say I wouldn't have been able to accomplish what I did without the two of them. Follow along as Eric and I and all of the other runners battle it out in the windy and unusually cold, sub-freezing temperatures of late-January Wilmington, NC and find out how far we were able to go and how long we were able to push ourselves.
