We added another "skill" to our full time RV living arsenal! Whether you want to or not, you will learn how to fix things if you are full timing in an RV. Just like your sticks and bricks, things will stop working, break, or become damaged and will need repair. Well, that's just what happened to us! Our rig was damaged and there were three significant rips on the roof! The scary part is, we do not know how this damage occurred! Lesson learned here, watch for overhead anything at all times. It is obvious that something scraped along the roof. We suspect it was from a broken piece of aluminum awning when we fueled up but we really do not know. So what did we do to patch these gaping holes in our roof? Well, the first thing we always do- turn to the internet. There we learned about the benefits of Eternabond tape, so we ordered that from Amazon right away. Meanwhile, we wanted to secure the accordion triangle shaped tears to ease in the Eternabond application and to provide some protection to the exposed wood below. We used Flex Glue, from Lowes, for this. Materials for Our Roof Repair: Flex Glue Knee Pads Eye Protection Whisk Brush Sturdy cardboard or wood to cut tape on Utility Knife Acetone Rag Rubber Gloves Roller to apply pressure to tape Eternabond tape PART 1 - Tacking Down the Torn Flaps: 1. Clean the area of dust and debris with a small brush. 2. Use a liberal amount of Flex Glue to tack down torn flap. 3. Apply pressure and hold down for a few minutes. Flaps secured, we waited for the tape to arrive. PART 2 - Applying the Eternabond Tape: 1. Thoroughly clean the area with Acetone. 2. Using a utility knife (box cutter) and sturdy piece of cardboard or wood, cut the Eternabond tape allowing for enough overlap to seal to the roof over the tear. 3. Peel back a few inches of the Eternabond tape and begin applying a few inches at a time. Peel back, place where you want to begin, roll over the area with pressure, then peel back a few more inches. Repeat the process until done- peel back a few inches, roll on with pressure. That's it! Easy, breezy. It didn't take long to securely seal our three rips. I found about three other areas on the roof that looked like water could seep in and I sealed them up. Our repair was completed and cured before the next rain. We've been through many windy rainstorms since this repair and no leakage! We hope you never have to make a repair like this on the road, but if something does happen, we recommend keeping a roll of Eternabond tape and Flex Glue on hand. The Flex Glue has been used to successfully repair many broken items around our RV. OUR COLLAPSIBLE LADDER: If you are in the market for a sturdy ladder to get on your roof, check out this ladder from Amazon. Our RV does not have a built on ladder so we carry this lightweight collapsible ladder with us. It is cheaper than the popular Little Giant ladders.
