I'm at Windsor castle and wanted to record some thoughts/lessons before getting on flight to Taipei - I learned a ton just from hanging out with the authors at the 20booksto50k conference in London. These people are single-handedly changing publishing. However I have a cold and am medicated, which might make me more loopy than usual; or possibly it's about on par for my videos. I realized recently I'm working too hard to defend the successful publishing model authors are using. I'll continue to share strategies that work, but the only thing that really matters is writing a book lots of people love, which means knowing your audience and striving to share value. That's my mission, but I understand may authors have been taught to be skeptical of writing to market. 99% of marketing is choosing to write a book readers will love. My main takeaways: ★publish longer series of shorter books (I already knew that.) ★or don't. One guy wrote an 800 page book, got 2000 reviews and was offered 25K from ACX for the audiobooks. ★strategic partnership: I'm happy with what I'm doing but slow, and I'm competing against teams of authors (and they're having tons of fun worldbuilding together). I'm going to find some authors to cowrite with this year. ★BookBub is looking for $1.99 wide books. New plan: publish wide at first, full price, get a bookbub deal, then maybe put the book into KU. ★You can bargain with specific platforms: for example, tell Kobo or ibooks you'll go all-in with their platform for a new series if they promote you. ★Draft2Digital is working on print book formatting and print distribution options ★Make friends, don't be a dick (Barry Hutchison's talk was hilarious, you can watch it here:    • Bootstrapping your book with Barry Hutchinson  ) ★ Put my permafree books on Googleplay, some of them are old so I need to update them, fix my optin offers and use them for lead generation. ★You don't HAVE to do any of this stuff, but you are competing against people who are doing this stuff (the members of this conference are earning a huge chunk of the pie - one friend is spending 50K on her next book launch because she knows it'll be a big earner.) ★None of this stuff matters - if you don't want to write quickly or write in popular genres, that's fine (but don't assume your books are higher quality or will last longer because you've spent more time on them).
