Guillermo Lago - Las Noches de Verano III Elissa Kana, saxophone Casey Dierlam Tse, piano Performance from the 2021 Region 3 North American Saxophone Alliance Conference March 20, 2021 Program Note: Between 2012 and 2013, Guillermo Lago composed a series of five chamber works for various instrumental combinations entitled Las Noches de Verano (“The Summer Nights”). After a particularly busy end to 2011—Lago had so many performing, teaching, and arranging engagements that he did not compose any music in the last half of the year—he started 2012 by fulfilling the request of his friend and trumpet player André Heuvelman to write “something simple and beautiful.” The result was Las Noches de Verano I, a five-minute “almost Dadaist” lyrical work for trumpet, string quartet, and piano in which Lago sought to “catch the beauty of summer nights: instantaneous moments of complete happiness followed by the nostalgic awareness of the fragility of life, comforted nevertheless by the warmth of a summer night.” After writing Las Noches de Verano I and “inspired by his many musician friends,” Lago decided to write more pieces that expressed this same sentiment. Lago wrote the third piece in his “Summer Nights” series, Las Noches de Verano III, for bassoon and piano in 2012 and dedicated it to his friend Dorian Cooke. Lago also created a version of this piece for baritone saxophone and piano.
