www.motormatters.co.za www.changecars.co.za www.allthingsmotoring.com Living with the ScorpioN over an extended period confirmed my opinions from both the launch event and a later week long test of the vehicle. In fact, I was surprised at how comfortable the vehicle is and how refined it's overall behaviour is in everyday living. For the buyer who is looking for a 5 or 7 seater SUV that can have full 4x4 and off-road adventure ability plus offer a comprehensive luxury spec as well. The 2.2l diesel motor delivers 129kW and 400Nm through a 6 speed automatic transmission. While those figures don't seem that high on paper, on road the vehicle never feels underpowered and freeway overtaking is easy as well. Fuel consumption can vary but an urban figure of under 9l/100km can drop significantly to around 7.5l/100km on the open road. For a large and rather non-aerodynamic design these figures are extremely good. We had the top spec Z8L model on test giving the full luxury spec, with items like full leather trim, infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple Carplay, wireless phone charging, sunroof, upgraded Sony sound system and much more. Interestingly, this spec option is only offered in conjunction with the 4XPlor 4 wheel drive system that offers 2H, 4H and 4L at the turn of a dial. As a personal opinion, I believe that a miniscule percentage of these vehicles ever use this proven 4 wheel drive and off-road ability in real life. I can vouch for the 4x4 ability of the ScorpioN after the launch event last year where we tackled soft sand among many other obstacles. I have to admit that not everything in life is perfect and I must mention 2 issues that I encountered during the extended test. I generally dislike stop/start systems on most cars. The Mahindra version, experienced on some previous models as well, is not as smooth in operation and I had to remind myself to disengage it every time I started the car. It's an easy enough click of a piano button on the centre fascia but I wish it could be permanently turned off. A second point is the 3rd row seat. Considering the price point and value of the vehicle, I could live with the fold and tumble mechanism and even the fact that the seat does not fold away fully when not used. My issue is the restraining system for holding the bench in the folded position.......there is a small strap and hook that fits over the middle row head restraint. However this is not really effective and when pulling off on a VERY steep uphill I nearly had a heart attack at a massive BANG from the rear of the car that shook the whole vehicle. I thought I must have collided with something. On investigation it was the rear bench dropping down, but proof that a more adequate system is required. Talking about load space, with the rear 3rd row bench folded, we loaded holiday luggage for 5 easily into the ScorpioN I have to ask Mahindra SA why the obviously cheaper models in the range are available as 2 wheel drive only but you cannot get a 2 wheel drive option with the top Z8L specification level? Based on the pricing of the lower spec models, there is a R50 000 differential between the Z8 models with or without 4XPLor. At the current price of our test vehicle of R604 999, I certainly think there could be a market for a Z8L 2 wheel drive at R550 000. What do you think? The ScorpioN is currently priced from R473 999 to R604 999 and that includes a 5 year/ 100 000km service plan #mahindra #mahindrasa #mahindrascorpio #mahindrascorpion #scorpion #carblogindia
