"Metsä" was originally recorded in 1996, when Moonsorrow was a duo formed by cousins Ville and Henri Sorvali. Five years later, when the project had grown into a real band with five members, the demo was rescued from oblivion. This may have been inspired by the fact that a record label had offered them to rework and re-release their other major demo, "Tämä ikuinen talvi" in May 2001; there was no label involved in the reworking of "Metsä", but it happened more or less at the same time. In April of the same year, drummer Marko Tarvonen remastered the whole demo, and in June, Henri added a bass (which the original recording lacked), a mouth harp and some additional clean vocals and keyboards. The end result was shelved for some time until, on March 21st 2002, it was uploaded as MP3 files to their website as a free download, together with new artwork in good quality for whoever wanted to print it and put it in a CD case.
