We welcome you to join us on Wednesday 23rd July, 2025, 12-1pm. About the topic: Novel psychoactive substances (NPS), particularly highly potent synthetic opioids like nitazenes, pose a growing public health threat in Australia, with increasing detections in clinical and forensic settings. Addressing this challenge requires improved detection and monitoring, harm reduction strategies, and coordinated efforts among healthcare providers, law enforcement, and policymakers. This presentation explores the rise of NPS in Australia and the challenges of their rapid emergence, including detection, monitoring, and responses to related harms. About our guest speaker: Associate Professor Jennifer Schumann is Head of the Drug Intelligence Unit at the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine and Monash University, with over 20 years’ experience as a forensic pharmacologist and toxicologist. She leads national and state-based projects on emerging drugs and pioneered the world’s first research on coward punch assaults, significantly impacting public awareness and policy. Jennifer has received multiple awards, including a Churchill Fellowship, and held international research fellowships in Sweden and France. She is President of the Forensic and Clinical Toxicology Association, on the board of The International Association of Forensic Toxicologists and Stop the Coward Punch Foundation, an adviser for Pill Testing Australia, contributing to national drug-checking guidelines and influencing public policy through her research.
