You've heard the famous opening flourish a million times, but please make sure you wait to hear the ending which is even more exciting than the beginning (8:11-9:04 in the video). The original manuscript of the Toccata and Fugue in D Minor has never been found, so no one knows for sure that it was actually composed by Bach. In fact, there is only one surviving copy from the 18th Century. This manuscript was made by Johannes Ringk, who probably made his copy from one that was made by his teacher, Johann Kellner. Kellner had studied with Bach. If you were a student in those day, that is how you got music to practice - you made a handwritten copy from your teacher's copy. Kellner made many copies of Bach's music, and when you compare his manuscripts to the pieces where we have Bach's own manuscript, you find that Kellner was no perfectionist. So just like playing whisper down the lane, the music that we have today for the Toccata and Fugue in D Minor almost certainly comes from a handwritten copy of a handwritten copy of the original. This means we really have no idea if all the notes on the page are correct!
