Why REALTORS Should Collab with More Small Businesses In Your Community

As a real estate agent, you have something in common with every single business owner in your community. Everybody from carpet cleaners, to candy store operators, to toy store owners, to clothing store owners — every one of you has something in common. Here’s what you have in common: you all want to do more business. As a small business operator, what you can do is tap into that. What I would suggest to you is you go through your entire sphere of influence today and you take a yellow highlighter out — maybe print it out — and put a highlight next to all the small business owners that you know. You know more than you think. When you have that highlighter out and you highlight all those folks, the next step is to call them, reach out to them, text them, or stop by their business if it’s convenient and appropriate, and say this: “Hey, you know what? I want to support a local business every single week, and I’d love to do a collab with you if you’re interested.” A collab — what’s a collab? A collab is a collaboration. That’s what the young people say when they say they want to do a collaboration. Now, what is a collab going to look like for us as REALTORS with other small businesses? It’s where you, number one, endorse them on your social media. You’re going to say, this is a glowing review of this company. You’ve done business with them. You recommend them. Maybe it’s a video of you outside the business. Maybe it’s a video of you enjoying whatever they create. You give them an endorsement and you tag them so that they can then share that endorsement. If they want to do a collab, they may want to do the same thing back to you. They endorse your company, you endorse theirs. And then you can take this further if there’s a relationship that makes sense — maybe a financial planner, maybe an insurance person, maybe a mortgage broker — where you could actually put your spheres of influence together and put your databases together. Here’s how you do that: You could do a client party together. You plan a party together. You say, “Hey, I’m doing a client event and we’re doing this with my partner, my insurance partner. He’s going to come over and he’s going to bring his clients. I’m going to bring my clients, but we’d love to have you attend. It’s going to be at this place at this time.” Now we cross-market this event to both groups of people. I get to meet his database. He gets to meet mine. Now we have opportunities — all kinds of opportunities. Just think: if you started collabing with more businesses in your local community, what could happen for you and your business? You’re going to help them, and they’re going to help you. It’s the Go-Giver attitude. It’s leading with reciprocity.
