Mandy is a 1952 British film about a family's struggle to give their deaf daughter a better life. It was directed by Alexander Mackendrick and is based on the novel The Day Is Ours by Hilda Lewis. It stars Phyllis Calvert, Jack Hawkins and Terence Morgan. This is perhaps the most poignant scene in the film, when Mandy (Mandy Miller) finally breaks her silence and manages to articulate some meaningful sounds. It is also the first film appearance by Jane Asher, who at the time was six years old and went on to become a key figure of 1960s UK entertainment and arts culture. She plays Nina, the blonde girl sitting next to the teacher.
